Will I be in jail for this?

We got on the train this morning with valid tickets, but we sat in the First Class. Then two staffs came to check the ticket and told us our tickets are not valid in the First Class so we have to pay 20 pounds fine each. We said we can leave, but they insisted that we have to pay. We are really so angry, firstly, we are foreigners here, we really did not know our valid tickets cannot be used in First Class on the same train; second, there was no sign or notice said this is First Class and we have to pay more if we want to sit in the First Class; third, the staffs got on the train with us at the same time, they should remind us, but they just directly came to us asking the fine, we really thought they were intented to do that. However we said we can leave or we can pay for the First Class, they insisted that we had no choice except paying the fine. I am so angry and I said to them: you are racist. They said they wil sue me for slander, what will happen to me now? Will I be in jail?
Answer:
No.
Did you breathe through all that?
If you paid the fine then nothing.
my concern is why you assumed they are racist for merely trying to enforce the law.
No way man
Pay the fine. You are European. You know better. Just pay the fine and forget it.
I doubt that you would go to jail but I don't know what country you're in. It sounds to me like they were trying to bilk you out of some money, possibly because they could tell you were foreigners and thought that you'd just go along with it.
i really dont think so.. you should have a case.. if you're not from there.. and there was no sign and you offered to move.. its not like you were being difficult and refused to leave..and the racist thing... did they get your name.. and i dont think that they can do much about that either.. you were making a comment.. you have the right... so im not sure where you were since you were a foreigner .. but dont worry.. i would think you have a case
You could be. "When in Rome.." Read signs; obey the laws.....wherever you are.......or stay home.or in your country where you know the rules.
looks like you are seeing when a first class ticket is bought and you are in their seat, it is like parking in a Handy capped parking, it is not to be done unless you have the correct ticket.
No, they won't throw you in jail just because you called them racist. However, were you aware that you were sitting in First Class seats?---cuz no matter where you are first class is always more expensive, but there should have been some staff standing there to check your tickets and permit you to enter in the first class section, if there was no staff and you did not know the section was first class because there was no signs then it is not your fault, and they should have given you the option of going back to regular seats--since they did not do so, this is their wrong-doing...so dont worry about it they have no reasonable claim to sue you.
You broke the rules. Clearly your English is good enough to post this question, it should have been good enough to read the signs on the doors (painted on the glass) that said "First Class Only"...

How was this "racist"? If a policeman arrested you for breaking some other law, would you consider that "racist", too?

Pay your fine. And pay attention!

UPDATE: You are a liar, you are not a "foreigner", you may be of Nepalese heritage but have stated in other answers that you were born in Britain! There is NO WAY you did not know you were sitting in First Class.

You brought shame to your mother! Shame on you!
I think you would already be in jail if you were going, I would have told them all to take a number , form a line and kiss my ****
You are foriegners, you will get away with it, only British nationals get stung for everything in this country! And sue you for slander for calling them racist? you will probably win that one too and they will be thrown in jail for racism!
People have to STOP playing the racist card every time things don't go their way. You broke the law and was asked to pay the fine for doing so. Stop whining and pay the fine. Next time say we are sorry we did not realize and don't be a smart *** and call someone a racist for doing their job.
I'm sorry...you sat in a section that was in no way marked "First Class", and some guys came around trying to get $20 from you?

Sounds like the "fine" was going to go right into the pocket of the guy who asked you. I'd turn this person over to the proper authorities.

He probably was profiling you, figuring that a foreigner would just pay and apoligise to avoid furtherr problems.
Yes you can, if they have your information; 1. They can send you the fine. When you don't pay for it then a warrant will be posted for your arrest. 2. They could've gotten the police to arrest you on site for Theft of Service. Ignorance of the law is not a defense.

For example, you're in this situation, "Sorry, I didn't know you couldn't smoke weed and drink alcohol in public." Do not pass GO, Do no collect $200. You're going straight to jail.
forget it they probably have already. incase they havn't write a letter of complaint to the rail company and send a copy of your tickets etc send it recorded delivery. that will make them realise that you are prepared to fight against them all the way.
No chance of you going to jail.

You acted quite poorly in a foreign country and you tried to claim racism to get your way. There's absolutely nothing racist about having to pay an up-charge for a first class seat. Everyone does.

If they sue you for slander (which I seriously doubt), there's nothing there that would even hint of a jail term.

Next time be nice and follow the rules. . and stop trying to get your way by accusing folks of being racist.please.
I'm sorry about the situation you found yourselves in. When one purchases a ticket, it is understood where the person would then be seated. The section, seat number, etc. are on the ticket. When boarding one should ask to be directed to the correct seat paid for. If there are no signs posted, you can always find an attendant to talk to. After you were told that you were seated in the wrong section, you should have been allowed to go to the correct seats you paid for without anyone mistreating you. If I were you, I'd contact the company you bought the tickets from and get information as to the proper procedure to lodge a complaint against the persons who were responsible for the misunderstanding. Please don't feel that everyone is racist against visitors from other countries. There are some of us who do not treat visitors from other countries badly. If necessary, contact an attorney and I wish you luck and hope this is resolved to your satisfaction.
well they are way out of order and you wont go to jail at all for the seek help from citizens advice and they will help you with everything also you could ask for the manager of the train station and tell him what happened and also you could call the ombunsman the citizen advice person can give you the number for them it was wrong what they did to you they were taking advantage of you because you are foreigners and they should get told off for that so i would go ahead and take it further
Read one of your previous answers, you were born here, you are not a foreigner and I'm sure our train staff get extremely peed off by people taking advantage and pretending not to understand they don't know what 1st class is! For goodness sake it says on the doors and (used to on the windows)

Why should you not pay if you've already made most of the journey 1st class for which you didn't have tickets?

Ignorance is no defence in the law.
Calling someone a racist in public if they are not is against the law. To be found guilty though, the victim of the slander has to have been caused some kind of provable damage. I think you can rest easy you won't be put in jail. Don't call someone a racist though, just because they've done something you don't like. The British are not stupid and know anyone, no matter what country they're from will be able to see there is a distinct difference between sections on a train. You were trying it on and had to pay.
Me not from here, me no understand. Come On.
You can work a computer and ask a question here. Don't you think a guard on a train has heard it all before.
I think 20.00 is not bad actually depending on your journey length.
Write to the Railway Company and explain
No question this with the railway police
If you lied to us about not being British, what else have you lied about in this question? Your credibility is shot, so you don't deserve an answer.
I think I jail's are full enough without sending u to jail for sitting in first class.
no as slander is a civil matter but I dont see why you decided the ticket inspector was racist he was only doing his job and hed have done the same if you were british, african, asian, american etc etc
It is highly unlikely that any action will be taken against you. If you believe that you were wrongly fined then you need to take this up with the Government Department which deals with the train in which you were travelling. I doubt very much if the Ticket inspector would have any chance of taking you to court over your calling them racist, and it is most difficult to sue for slander. I would seriously take the matter up with the Train authorities. If you explain your situation to them and you can show that you innocently sat in the First class and were not intentionally trying to defraud then you may have your fine refunded to you. In most cases they are very good and do try to help in matters where tourists from abroad are concerned. They want to promote a good impression of the Railway system here. I would not worry about going to Gaol though, that would never happen. Good luck
You can file the lawsuit against that staff or contact to the railway complain department.
