smoking, and eating too much, and a million other things, why is it the government's business to tell people how to live if they are only physically hurting themselves? people ride motorcycles, which is a hundred times more dangerous than riding in a car unbuckled. so its not for safety, what else is it for?
Answer:
I'm for natural selection. If you are a smart, educated person, you will understand that wearing seatbelt while in a car = increased chances of survival if in an accident. A lot of states dont' require helmets. again. Helmets may not look as cool as your tresses waving in the wind on your free ride, but if you are stupid enough not to wear a helmet and get in a wreck, you are screwed. I don't know why it is a law. I think it has to do with big government trying to dictate the lives of their constituents because they think we are too stupid to think for ourselves.
What I don't get is how states allow people to ride in the back of a pick up truck and still enforce a seat-belt law??
There isn't a hard and fast answer to this. It's a question of how invasive the law would be balanced against the benefit to society.
They don't outlaw motorcycles, but they do require helmets.
They don't ban smoking, but they severely restrict it.
There are some things which society will support, and others it won't.
These things change over time, too. The current smoking laws would have been massively rejected 50 years ago.
It is a law because that is what people want. That is why Michael Bloomberg, mayor NYC, is on a crusade the outlaw the evil transfats that make food taste good. People want him and politicians to tell us what we can eat or do from the time we get up until we go to bed. This is why most people elect Socialist leaders like him and the Democrats in charge of Congress. Indeed, it is now illegal in many states to smoke in bars because smoke has troubled the Clinton admin forward much more than other threats. We desperately need the government to protect us from these evils.
Because dead people do this country no good? I don't know why people have such a problem with buckling up. It's not like it's a 5 point harness. I actually found myself buckling up when I moved my car from one spot in the driveway to another. That's when you know you are OCD about something.
Because the injuries sustained by not wearing a belt are far more serious and costly to everyone. A quadriplegic will cost millions over a lifetime. Personally, smoking should b outlawed. It is by far the nastiest habit one can have. The stench of a chainsmoker is horrendous, not to mention all of the phlegm they hack up constantly. And they want everyone to pay for their emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma heart disease and lung cancer, because they "got the habit"
There are allot of teenage 18-19 yr. old drivers who are considered adults but they drive quiet recklessly and if it wasn't for the buckle up law I think many would die or get injured pretty severely. I am glad the law is there because it makes people do the right thing. What I do not understand is why there are no seat belts in a school bus? Thousands of children are allowed to ride with out a seat belt everyday during the course of a school year. Go figure!
Part of the rationale, as with the helmet law for motorcycles, was all of the head injuries that ended up on the public's bill after the insurance ran out
Now here's a thought that never occurs to a lot of people:
What about passengers in your car? If you are unrestrained and get into a rollover accident, the fact of you flying around the cab could easily kill somebody else...all those elbows, knees and foreheads can do a lot of damage.
If you're only ever driving by yourself, and you have plenty of insurance, I would say that you have a point.
Because there's no good reason NOT to wear a seatbelt. Banning them from riding motorcycles would take away their ability to get around on a motorcycle, but wearing a belt costs nothing and doesn't burden you in any way.
