Why is it that 18 is old enough to go to war and die for your country but not old enough to buy a beer?

if youre old enough to kill or be killed shouldnt you be old enough to go to all the bar shows and have a beer if you want one?
Answer:
I remember this same question being asked 50 years ago when the draft was going strong. The same answer is as pertinent now as it was then. Because older people are not dumb enough to go out and get themselves killed for some politician's mistake. This same, let's say, inexperience is why young people should not be allowed to legally drink.

Young people, sheesh! Always thinking they have something original.
OMG why are you asking this question. this is age freaking old!
cuz its the law duh!
that is a great question
Not every 18 year old is in the army honey.
If you are in the military, and under 21, you are allowed to drink alcohol when on base.

EDIT:I am getting 3 thumbs down for stating a fact. Wow.
I agree, maybe you should have to be 21 to join the military
because when you look at statistics at drinking and driving, when 18 year olds were allowed to drink legally there were more fatal accidents involving vehicles and drinking.
Because most of the time your body is still not mature enough at that age to handle alcohol, depending on how much you put into it. And through the military training you recieve you become more mature, and learn to respect yourself more.
Your chances of killing someone after drinking are much higher than if you simply enlisted in the military. Think about it.
Join the Army, there is all kinds of beer available to 18 year olds.
Heck,you can even buy whiskey!
They don't want you to drive a drunk tank.
Because kids of that age are not responsible enough to drink.
It's a stupid inconsistency that many have pointed out before. 18 year olds should be allowed to drink alcohol or you should have to be 21 to join the army. Or hey, maybe we could compromise on 19 and a half. It seems silly to me to have different ages of majority.

Edited to add: I have no problem, though, with a graduated licensing program that says your blood alcohol must be zero every time you get behind the wheel for the first 5 years you have a license, whether you get your license at 16 or 30.
At 18 you can also enter into legally binding contracts, be imprisoned for crimes, be sued for your personal actions, and vote. I honestly dont know how these laws could even be constitutional.

I agree wuth an above answer..if someone isnt mature enough to drink they surely arent mature enough to make a decision like joining the military...raise the minimum age for the military to 21
I asked the same thing when I joined up at 19 (a few yrs back). It's pretty ridiculous and it seems most don't care. What they should do is keep the drinking age at 21, but allow any active duty military personnel to buy alcohol (they only need to show their active duty military ID).
edit: Gotta love the "logic" being thrown around... 18yr olds are mature enough to handle weapons and kill the right people for the sake of our "freedom" but once you put a beer in their hand, it all changes. Abu Ghraib was real responsible...they must of been drinking (LOL). I do like the idea of having to be 21 to join the military...that'd keep those vultures (recruiters) away from the high schools. And perhaps ALL those who support this war, should enlist. Obviously they were "responsible" enough for re-electing the Imbecile-in-Chief.
Maybe they'll make it that if you go to war at 18 you get to buy beer 3 years early
18 is too young for all of those things. Especially voting. 21 should be the minimum age for the military.
It is easier to become an alcoholic at a younger age and probably spurred from prohibition the government is more worried about people becoming alcoholics than about people dieing for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The premise of your question is a bit off. Since there is NO DRAFT if an 18, 19 or 20 year old goes off to war it is because he or she has voluntarily joined the military. Where, incidentally they CAN buy a beer. Drinking ages are laws for states and local governments not set by the Federal government, though they do give incentives to states to adopt such laws.
Depends how you look at it. Your instinct to survive and the decisions you'd make in this environment would probably be better than the judgement you'd have drinking beer. War is an atmosphere of survival and thinking in a higher capacity and as a teen drinking judgement is lost a lot faster. Believe me, you're not missing out on not being able to drink a beer.
Because alcohol is freaking Disgusting, and ruins your mind body and soul... Going to war on the other hand is good for your Country.. If you died in war atleast you died defending the right to freedom for all americans..

Great question by the way.. I hope ive answered it well enough.
I think 18 year olds are too young for either , but to answer the question, right wing Christian housewives don't want 18 year olds to drink because they think beer is the devil.
people who are 21 buy alcohol for 18 year olds. if it was legal for 18 year old to buy alcohol they would buy it for 15 and 16 year olds. If you in the military and a drinking while off duty they basically turn their heads and pretend not to notice as long as you dont do anything stupid. this means that if you are underage and in the military, the people above you dont give a damn if you drink when your not working... so its really not a problem.
This is such a lame old question.

What does drinking alcohol have to do with serving your country?

Anyway, it is better to die for your country fighting for her, than to kill one of your own countrymen drunk driving.

Did you know that more people die in alcohol related deaths every year than ALL that have been killed in Iraq? And that is just vehicle related accidents, not all the other stupid things that happen.
http://www.alcoholalert.com/drunk-drivin...

More people die in three years in the U.S. from alcohol related accidents than the total number that died in Vietnam in the 15 or so years we were there.

WOW! I state and link actual facts and get 3 thumbs down? A person would have to be a moron not to be able to see the facts for what they are.
The reason 18 is old enough for war but not old enough to buy a beer is the same reason why some states still have laws about where they can park their horses.

Personally, I feel they should swap the drinking age and the legal age to drive, then add 1 to the drinking age ( I would hate to be a teacher of a drunk child ). Most 19 yr olds don't go to school (high school)- I dont mind them drinking at college so much because they're paying for it or at least, that's the rumor.
They're not analogous situations. If you're going to war, you've been trained and are supervised and are going to fight for an important cause (or at least we hope it's an important cause). Fighting for freedom is, most people believe, worth dying for.

But when the drinking age was 18, there was too much irresponsible drinking, leading to all kinds of dangerous behavior including drunk driving that led to much ridiculous suffering for people injured or maimed for life. And of course, many people died in drunk driving.

While DUI and the resulting deaths and maimings are still a problem, they're significantly less prevalent now. More people are alive and in one piece and functioning. That's more important than you missing out on the "fun" of having a few beers.
Nope.
.
Anyone who chooses an avatar with green hair should never, ever be allowed to drink alcoholic beverages.
.
When you're 18, you are perfect cannon fodder and easily trained. Military Discipline is the key here.
.
Drinking and youth don't mix well, it's one thing to have a few beers, but kids at 18, and I know I was there once, tend to drink to excess.
When I see kids drinking beer with a funnel, I just know they aren't mature enough for anything serious, like voting or driving..
Having a kid with green hair is not that bad, but green hair and beer is a bad combination.
.
people kill and get killed everyday..at any age. you dont have to go to war for that to happen. legally your not supposed to drink at 18, but it still happens. If someone does go off to war and they are only 18..then its by choice..when someone joins the military they know that there is a chance they could get deployed...they're not stupid. depending on what you do in the military...you could have better chances of going...like for example, if you are going in active army..infantry..there is a very high chance of you getting deployed.
because our government is a bunch of prudes and parents arent doing their part. illinois tried this a while(30 years or so) back and they found that the 18 year olds were just too stupid. as usual, many were responsible but a few were so recklessly irresponsible that they ruined it for everyone else. i still think the best path is to do away with drinking ages and whatnot and let parents decide when their children are ready for that.
